Ho Chi Minh Trail Vietnam Motorcycle Tours – 12 Days

This Trans Vietnam Motorbike Tour is for rider who wants to explore through Vietnam From Hanoi to Sai Gon. Especially, for customers are interested in learning about the history of Vietnam War 1954-1975. The journey will ride through the series of Vietnam Wars’ relics along the Ho Chi Minh trail. To reach the beginning of the trail, we will pass the famous scenic Tam Coc – Ninh Binh where is considered as Ha Long on land of Vietnam and Cuc Phuong national Park.

DAY BY DAY ITINERARY

Day 1: Hanoi – Ninh Binh (110 km)

First day would be easy day, it takes you only 110km from Hanoi to Ninh Binh in 3 hours riding. The guide will get the easy road that you can escape from crazy traffic in Hanoi safely.
All riders need to be at Vietnam Motorcyclist Tours’ workshop around 8h30 am for preparation, get the bikes and riding gears. Our guides will give you some riding rules of how riding safe in Vietnam.
There are some huge rice paddies just after getting out of Hanoi, you can follow the guide riding along the zig zag way on the fields and discover some villages of Viet people.
Arrive Ninh Binh around 11 am, you will stop for the first site – Dinh and Le King Temples where Vietnamese worshiping the First Kings of Vietnam. After that, you continue riding through rice paddies in Ninh Binh heading to Tam Coc, see a lot stunning view of the land that mixing between mountains, rivers and rice fields. All riders will stop for lunch in Tam Coc near by the marina. The popular tourism activity here is boating on the river to visit 3 caves. After lunch, the guide would take you on boat trip which is sailing by a local man or women traveling along Ngo Dong river going through 3 caves. The cruise will bring you the most amazing view in Ninh Binh when you pass the yellow rice paddy and mountains raise up from water.
In the evening, all riders will relax and stay overnight at hotels or homestay in Tam Coc.

Day 2: Tam Coc – Tan Ky – Km 0th Ho Chi Minh trail ( 250km)

Today is such a long day, after breakfast with coffee, you will hit the road again. Certainly, your riding skill in Vietnam much more improved then you can speed up a little bit more. Continue riding on the lovely villages’ road in Ninh Binh in the morning, your guide would lead you heading to Tan Ky-a historical site where Viet Cong started the Ho Chi Minh trail during the Vietnam War.
You may be interested in the other relics on the way to Tan Ky, the paths will lead you riding through the countryside of the land of Thanh Hoa. Monuments such as Ho Dynasty’s Citadel, and Lam Kinh Citadel of Le Dynasty are historical site that have stunning view and your guide will help to communicate to local people understanding the history of Vietnam in feudalism.
Was built in the end of the 14th century, the Ho Dynasty’s Citadel is considered the only stone Castle in Southeast Asia, built solidly with stone blocks. It was recognized by UNESCO and still exist intact until today.
Lam Kinh Citadel was built in the 15th century under the Le Dynasty. Some relics remains such as Royal tombs, epitaphs and unique architectural blocks.
After lunch at the roadside restaurant, you will get off the village roads and start going on the HCM highway which is based on the original HCM trail in the war. The road has now been built to be more beautiful, so the riders can go a little faster to ensure the duration of the tour.
Arrive Tan Ky around 5 pm, all riders need to be refresh with a cold beer, gossiping about the trip you did today. Then, check in the hotel, relax waiting for dinner and discover the night time in this mountain town.

Day 3: Tan Ky - Phong Nha (270 km)

One of the most important relics in this place is the milestone number Zero of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, where the Vietnamese People’s Army assembled weapons, ammunition, human and logistics for the long war.
After breakfast with coffee, the guide will take you to check in milestone number Zero in Tan Ky town, understand a hardship Vietnam war through the stories of this landmark.
After visiting the milestone monuments, we continue on the journey of the Viet Cong’s soldiers in the war, riding through the land with wonderful views of the central of Vietnam.
One of the relics of the cruel war that we should not overlook is the Dong Loc junction, where 10 girls of the NVA troops died when they were only 20 in duty repairing roads and destroying unexplored bombs to ensure the transportation route for the southern battlefield is not interrupted.
After stopping for lunch near Dong Loc junction, we will ride straight to Phong Nha Town because the road is very long. Check in hotel and rest, waiting for the Phong Nha visiting the next day.

Day 4: Phong Nha Cave - Dong Hoi (60km)

Today, in the morning, you will visit Phong Nha Cave nearby. After breakfast, the guide will take you on the boat trip in Chay river. It takes about 20 minutes to reach the gate of the Cave. Here, we will go into the cave to take photos, see the most beauty of this Phong Nha cave.
Phong Nha is a most typical of the aesthetic values of the natural world. According to the cave explorers, Phong Nha Cave is the only cave in Vietnam reaching seven criteria: the cave has the most beautiful underground river; There are high and wide gates; There are beautiful sandy beaches and reefs; There is a beautiful lake; There is a large and beautiful dry cave; There is a magical and wonderful stalactite system; Is the longest water cave. And from that, Phong Nha cave is known as a first wonder.
Finish visiting Phong Nha cave at 11 AM, you return to HCM highway on motorbikes heading to Dong Hoi city, where you can go swimming on beautiful long beach. Swimming and relaxing would help you get back all lost energy as well as remove stress when joining traffic in Vietnam.

Day 5: Dong Hoi City - Khe Sanh Combat Base (182 km)

Waiting for you ahead are some said story about the War. This day, the guide will take you to visit the series of Vietnam war Remnants such as Vinh Moc tunnels, the 17th Parallel DMZ with Hien Luong Bridge and Truong Son cemetery
The first destination that you will visit is Vinh Moc Tunnel, in Vinh Linh, Quang Tri, built in the year of 1965, 1966. All the villagers moved to live underground. At that time, more than half a million tons of bombs were dumped into the village while villagers were safe underground. Live still goes on, the people still studying, working and many children were born in the tunnel.
Next destination is demilitarized zone DMZ, the 17th Parallel, Ben Hai river and Hien Luong bridge. Formed after 1954 in the Geneva Conference, marking the dissociation of Vietnam within 20 years. There were many NVA soldiers who had died while trying to cross the river to support for the Southern battlefield.
Not too far away from DMZ is Truong Son Cemetery where is the resting place of millions of NVA soldiers who had died during the Vietnam War.
You will imagine the brutality of the war through the stories, images and evidence of war remain in the relics. Even, the memories of a time of war will be resurrected for the veterans when you are back to this place.
Riders will reach Khe Sanh town in the late afternoon and stay at a small hotel, relax and then have dinner. Together with the guide telling stories around Vietnam War

Day 6: Khe Sanh – Lao Bao Boder Gate - A Luoi – Hue Citadel ( 230 km)

After visiting the museum, we will ride to Hue city along the mountain road, passing through A Luoi, where many ethnic minority living. The people of this region have their own customs quite different to other ethnic groups in the North mountainous of Vietnam. A Luoi is also a famous landmark in the war where has Hemberger Hill (Mount Abiah or peak 937). Depending on the time allowed, we will visit this area, because it has been seriously contaminated with landmines, so visiting this place is risky and the authorities have not allowed tourism activities yet.
Continue riding on winding road on high pass with lots of sharp and blind turns, you will reach closer to Hue City. The guide will choose to stay at a hotel that close enough for you to explore the City at night and also visit the Imperial Citadel next morning.

Day 7: Hue – Hai Van Pass – Hoi An ( 140 km)

Today will be an easy ride to the all bikers when you have whole morning go for visiting, sightseeing and taking photos. After a lovely breakfast at the hotel, all bikers will ride to the Hue Imperial Citadel, park the bikes and have 2 hours walking along the tourist route.
Hue Citadel was built in the 19th century under Nguyen Dynasty, the last feudal dynasty of Vietnam and remains relatively intact until today. Built in the unique Oriental architecture, the Citadel includes a combination of aesthetic and cultural architecture subjects such as the main Gate, Forbidden city, Temples or Palaces of the King and the Queens. The Hue Imperial Citadel is also a brutal battle in 1968, the opening battle of the Vietnam War.
Another monument worth for visiting is the Emperor Tu Duc’s Tomb, the most beautiful one of the Nguyen dynasty. Built in 1864 by five thousand soldiers and workers. They must work in hard conditions and inadequate, not enough to dress and food had caused a riots to overthrow the King Tu Duc.
After visiting the Citadel and Tu Duc’s tomb, we will head to Hoi An after having lunch. On this way, you will ride over the Hai Van pass, the most beautiful pass in Vietnam. From the high pass, you can see the amazing view of Lang Co gulf with the blue sea. With 21 km long and 500m high, Hai Van pass located in the borderline between Hue and Quang Nam which was used to be border of 2 countries. You will stop sometime on the pass and enjoy the stunning view while listening many interesting stories about this pass
Once you leave the pass behind, the Hoi An ancient town is waiting for you then. Check in the hotel and you can go relaxing on the nice Cua Dai Beach right close the town. After dinner, you can check surround Hoi an ancient town for some interesting night activities.

Day 8: Hoi An – My Lai – Qui Nhơn (300 km)

Today will be a long day for us, the 300km route will mainly run along the beautiful coastline of Central Vietnam. On our way, we will visit the village of My Lai – Pinkville
In spring 1968, over 500 Vietnamese civilians of Son My who were elderly, women and children massacred by U.S Army Troops. It is such the most shocking episode of the Vietnam.
Then after, we will visit the Chau Sa ancient city of Champa in the 9th century
We will witness by naked eyes the impressive salt field of Sa Huynh, the hard life of people making salt.
Arrive Qui Nhon late afternoon. Qui Nhon beach includes several famous beaches around such as: Bai Xep Beach, Ky Co beach, Eo Gio and Quy Hoa Beach where all are so peacefully and clean. It is like a paradise once you relaxed and enjoy the great long beach atmosphere after a long day driving.
Check in hotel and have beach relaxation. After dinner, you will discover the life of Qui Nhon at night

Day 9: Qui Nhơn – Nha Trang (224km)

Temporarily forget about the sorrow of the war and enjoy the beauty of scenery, bikers will continue riding along the central coastal paths of Vietnam. Visiting some attractive destinations where the young Vietnamese love to check in such as the Ky Co windy strait, Hung Thanh twin towers temple, Bai Xep peninsula…
Ahead of you is the longest wooden bridge in Vietnam. You will need to take this bridge in order to visit the Da Dia (dish stone) peninsula. Hopefully, you’re not afraid of riding on this bridge and you can imagine how local people dreaming about a good bridge. Stop for a while to enjoy the stunning view and take photos as your memories, you will hit back the road again.
There are many beautiful beaches on the way down to Nha Trang and you absolutely can play on the nice beach or swim in the warm water.
Nha Trang – a large city in the Southern of Vietnam where has the most beautiful sea and beaches. Customers can go swimming every time in the year as it’s sunny in 4 seasons. The traffic is quite crowded, requires bikers riding more attention and careful.
Arriving Nha Trang early afternoon, you will check in the hotel and preparing to go swimming in Nha Trang beach. After that, the guide will find a good place for dinner then together discover Nha Trang in night time.

Day 10: Nha Trang – Da Lat (130km)

Such beautiful Nha Trang, you will spend more time in the morning to discover a round Nha Trang or just lazily having sun bath on the beautiful beach.
With only 130 km silk road, we just need to depart after the lunch time. In the morning, you can ride around for visiting Thap Ba Ponaga Tower, Nha Trang Oceanography Institute and having Mineral Mud Bath are good idears you should not skip.
After the lunch in Nha Trang, you will start riding to Da Lat, moving from the ocean to the mountain. Riders will be heading to the second most beautiful high pass of Lam Dong highland. You properly fall in love with the lovely and romantic roads of this highland.
Da Lat – a town was built by the French in 1893 nowadays is Da Lat city. Located on the altitude of 1,500 meters above the sea level, Dalat possesses a wonderful atmosphere with average temperatures not exceeding 20 degrees C every year. Therefore, Dalat is the heaven of flowers captivates visitors. Called by the romantic names such as “City of Flowers, City of Love, Spring City, City of Fog….” Da lat is an attractive destination for visitors who seeking a peaceful place and couples come here seeking romance.

Day 11: Da Lat – Cat Tien National Park (190km)

Around Dalat there are many organic coffee work-shops, after breakfast, we will visit the lab and enjoy specialty fresh and clean coffee of Da Lat.
Next, we will head to Cat Tien National Park. On our way, we will visit the Cham villages, passing through the extensive rubber trees. We can participate in rubber collection or rubber with the people if you want.
Cat Tien National Park has a rich flora and fauna, a road through the National forest. It was also a place where the Viet Cong forces were chosen as the basis battle for the Vietnam War, and the United States implemented a plan to spray Agent Orange to clear the area. Because of that, there were severe sequelae on the soldiers of both sides and their descendants.

Day 12: Cat Tien – Cu Chi Tunnel – Sai Gon (208 km)

It is a pity we do not have more time here to explore interesting spots in the jungle such as biking through the jungle, visiting the jungle at night, or visiting the villages of Ethnic minority groups.
To visit the Cu Chi Tunnels, we need to leave early, lunch in Cu Chi. After lunch, we will visit the Cu Chi tunnels.
Located 60km from HCMC, Cu Chi is a interesting tourist sight for both Vietnamese & foreign tourists. The network of over 200km of tunnels became legendary when they played a vital role in the War. The tunnels were used by Viet Cong soldiers as hiding spots during combat, as well as serving as communication and supply routes, hospitals, food and weapon caches and living quarters for numerous North Vietnamese fighters. The tunnel systems were of great importance to the Viet Cong in their resistance to American forces and helped to counter the growing American military effort.
If we want shooting experience, Cu Chi will have a service for us to experience at self-sufficiency.
After touring Cu Chi, we will go to Saigon, straight to the train station to ship motorbike by train back to Hanoi. Finish an amazing motorbike trip around Vietnam. Hope that you have a great experience through our tour.
